Klopstockhaus
The birthplace of the poet Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock (1724-1803) was built around 1560 below the castle hill of Quedlinburg and is one of the numerous architectural monuments of the World Heritage City. The city’s first museum was established here as early as 1899. Since then, the Klopstockhaus gives an impression of the life and work of the poet.
With the expansion of poetic language and art, Klopstock played a decisive role in shaping the new literary trends of his time. His epic work (“The Messiah”) and his poetry (odes, hymns, elegies, songs) impressively mark a turning point in the history of poetry and are seen as a foundation on which classical German literature was able to build up and from which later generations of poets received significant stimulus.
How the body gets to language - Klopstock, Erxleben and GutsMuths in the paper age
"Do you have a body or are you a body?“ This question is the subject of a redesigned section of the permanent exhibition at the Klopstockhaus. Using the example of the poet Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, the pioneer of sports education Johann Christoph Friedrich GutsMuth and the first female doctor in Germany, Dorothea Christiana Erxleben, as well as many other voices of the 18th century, we show how the body was discussed in the Enlightenment.
During this period, our understanding of the human being changed fundamentally. A media revolution began with the literacy campaign and the increasing spread of paper, which also significantly changed the way of public communication. The role of paper in this so-called “paper age” is explored in the exhibition using interactive approaches and modern media. A new look at old things.

Guided Tours
We offer guided tours for groups of up to 20 people, because some of the museum rooms are pretty small. For bigger groups, we suggest checking out the museum on your own. Upon request, groups of up to 40 people can receive a short thematic introduction directly in front of the museum. The guided tours are free of charge, but a donation for the maintenance of the museum is requested. Please register your group in advance. You can also take a tour of the museum with the “Action Bound” app. The app can be downloaded free of charge. Tablets are also available in the museum if you do not wish to use your own device.
