Fachwerkmuseum im Ständerbau (half-timbered museum)

The outstanding historical value of Quedlinburg and its well-preserved medieval structure led to its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage. In a still largely enclosed, medieval-looking town complex at the foot of the historic castle hill, more than 2000 half-timbered houses have been preserved despite considerable losses in the past decades. Quedlinburg is thus regarded as the largest are monument in Germany.

The only half-timbered museum of its kind in Germany is housed in a Ständerbau from the first half of the 14th century. In a Ständerbau, upright beams, the “Ständer”, surround the building from the base to the roof. Through the "Ständer", ceiling beams are “shot”, which divide the house into two floors. Pins with wooden splints protect against tensile and shear forces.

The Fachwerkmuseum im Ständerbau provides information about the history of Quedlinburg’s half-timbered architecture from the 14th to the 19th century and about restoration and reconstruction measures in the World Heritage City Quedlinburg. Models explain the stylistic development of timber-framed construction.
