Market Church St. Benedikti Quedlinburg

The Market Church St. Benedikti has its origins in an early Romanesque predecessor church built in the 10th century at the crossroads of old trade routes. Some parts of the crypt are still preserved today.

Starting around 1100, the Market Church (first documented in 1233) was built as a city church in the centre of the historic Old Town of Quedlinburg. The church has evolved over centuries from a Romanesque basilica to its present architectural form. As a result, architectural elements and furnishings of all known eras can be found. Two large round arches on the east wall of the tower massif and stone altars testify to the Romanesque origins of the church. The three southern arcades with pointed arches and 8-square pillars, as well as the Calands chapel with the altar of Mary (1480) and the altar of Vespers in the south nave, date back to the Gothic periodThe Renaissance left flat beamed ceilings over the aisles and a carved pulpit with high-calibre reliefs for the creed. Baroque traces can be seen in the wooden barrel vault above the nave, the baptismal font made of alabaster and the wooden figure of King David.

In addition to this variety, the late Romanesque organ with its 52 stops and 3000 pipes, as well as the three new stained-glass windows, which represent the journey of Jesus from the birth to the ascension, are particularly worth seeing. After the southern helmet was destroyed by fire, the roof of the tower took on its present form. The related conversions made it possible to set up a tower apartment.

The exhibition “Quedlinburg From the Palatinate City to the City of Roland” shows the documented urban development up to the 15th century.
