The Lyonel Feininger Gallery is a museum and exhibition house for 20th century and contemporary art. It is dedicated to the work of Lyonel Feininger and has one of the world’s most important holdings of Feininger’s prints with the collection of the Bauhaus architect and Quedlinburger Dr. Hermann Klumpp, which is on permanent loan in the Lyonel Feininger Gallery. The museum is part of the Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt and is one of the “cultural lighthouses” in the new federal states.
Numerous watercolours and drawings, as well as some photographs and objects by Feininger’s hand, enrich the collection. In addition to a unique number of early paintings, the collection includes the “Self-Picture with Clay Pipe” from 1910 and the main work “Vollersroda I”, inspired by Cubism.

The collection is complemented by works by other classical modernist artists, including Lovis Corinth, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Emil Nolde. Special mention should be made of the permanent loans of the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz since 2005. In addition, the house has a rich stock of prints from the GDR period.

The Lyonel Feininger Gallery, opened in 1986 and expanded in 1997 by a new building, offers a charming contrast to Quedlinburg’s predominantly medieval old town, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. In 2013, the museum complex was expanded to include the lavishly renovated half-timbered building Schlossberg 11 and a newly built side wing, thus adding additional exhibition space and a studio for art education.

The German-American painter and graphic designer Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) counts as one of the most important representatives of “Classical Modernism. The collection in Quedlinburg is the most extensive closed collection of prints by this artist in Europe. It includes works from the years 1906 to 1955. The gallery presents Feininger’s works according to chronological, thematic or stylistic points of view and at the same time relates them to their intellectual and art-historical surroundings.

Large Anniversary Exhibition - Becoming Feininger

28 March to 12 September 2021

In 2021, the Lyonel Feininger Gallery in Quedlinburg celebrates the 150th birthday of its namesake. For the first time, three Feininger collections will be brought together as part of the anniversary exhibition, some of which have not yet been shown at all or at least never before together. At the same time, children between the age of 6 and 12 have the opportunity to become artists themselves and rediscover Lyonel Feininger’s works in the hands-on exhibition "Papileos Atelier".
