Old Church of Bad Suderode

The year of construction of the oldest building in Suderode on the eastern Harz is not known. As a southern clearing of the Quedlinburg Abbey, the town was first mentioned in documents in 1179. At that time the small church must have been standing, because the apse and the massive church tower are attested by frescoes of special beauty, unmistakably Romanesque origin. The small columns of the sound holes even have an Ottonian character.

The year 1590 is mentioned for the construction of the nave in later form. The year can still be read today on a whitewashed wooden wall in the sacristy. During a fire and looting in 1636, not only Bad Suderode’s half-timbered clay houses were on fire, but also the Old Church burned out. It was only after the Thirty Years' War that the tower was erected in 1663 by Stecklenberg carpenters. The founder was the castle lady of Stecklenburg, Catharina cob Oettingen. The inscription of the beams under the small console of the main gutter gives information about this.

The nave in its arched form visible today was probably built in the middle of the 18th century. The Latin inscription of a stone tablet reads“This temple was built in the time of Pastor Franz Wilhelm Bierdemann in 1749.

And although the small nave was enlarged by half on this occasion, a hundred years later the Old Church is again “too small and too dilapidated.

A new church in “pure Gothic style” was built in 1878 in the centre of Bad Suderode.
