Preußenturm

The Preußenturm tower stands on the Schwedderberg hill above the spa gardens in Bad Suderode. August Baentsch, a printer from Magdeburg, was a regular visitor to the spa in Bad Suderode and, in gratitude for the cure of his health problems, donated the money for the construction of the first Preußenturm tower in 1845. After a tower built in 1885 was demolished during the war years due to dilapidation and used as firewood, a new tower was built in 1953 as an open wooden half-timbered structure on the same site, but it was named the “Thomas Müntzer Tower.” This construction was sponsored by Reinhard Jahn, the owner of the “Stock- und Klappmöbelfabrik” (folding furniture factory) in Bad Suderode. After the reunification of Germany, the tower was renamed Preußenturm again and extensively renovated in 2007 by a local carpentry firm. As the tower rises above the tree line, it offers a sweeping view that stretches from Blankenburg to Quedlinburg and the Gegensteine rocks near Ballenstedt.
